Summary:

This week we talked about student engagement and its importance. When students are engaged in the course they are more likely to succeed. Maintaining engagement can be a little tricky in an online course. It is important to add things to the modules that will keep the students' attention. When students are able to conduct their own learning typically they become more engaged. In order to maintain engagement, it is important for one to make the material relevant. When students see the purpose of learning something they are more likely to be excited about learning it. It should the students the importance of knowing the skills or facts.

Item of Interest:

Because my course is dealing with a 3rd grade class, we will be meeting daily. Because I will see the students daily, I will have an easier time keeping them engaged. I am planning to have the students participate and various multiplication and division activities in the classroom. The course online will be used to present new information and review previously taught information. The way I am going to try to keep student engagement in the online portion is with discussion boards. Here the students will be able to ask questions about the lesson taught in the videos or the lessons covered in the classroom.

Problem or Concern

I am not sure how to create the self-test I want my students to take. I am assuming I can input multiple questions and state how many I want to be asked on the quiz. If anyone knows how to create self-tests please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Weeks Summary

This week we covered module five wich was about community and collaboration in an online course. The way the course is set up and how the teachers expect the students to communicate with one another plays an important role in how well the students will collaborate with one another. It is important for an online course to include collaboration so the students can feel for involved in the class. I think group projects are a good idea to help students collaborate with one another. However, I think it is very importance to have rules, expectations, and guidelines for the students to refer to when working collaboratively. Peer assessment is another way to ensure collaboration. I think peer assessment can be beneficial but I do not think peers should actually grade one another's work. This could lead to students not wanting to work with others or even to them dropping out. They should just provide feedback to one another. I think discussion boards are another way to have student collaboration.

Item of Interest

I think I am going to have my students participate in weekly discussions. They will also have a discussion board they can always go to post questions they may have about the homework, classwork, material, or just the course in general. I have also considered having my students create some type of game that covers what they have learned at the end of the course. This would be something the students would talk about outside the class and inside the class. They will more than likely construct the game in the classroom. I think this would be a great way to have the students collaborate with one another while reflecting back to what they learned in the course.

Problem or Concern

I have concerned with two things. The first is how well third graders will be able to participate in discussion boards. The second is, would having the students create a game be too advance for third grade. If these two things are too advance for collaboration activities, do any of you have any recommendations for collaboration activities.

Assessment

Summary

This week we completed module 4: Design (Assessment). We watched two videos. One of the videos was about using appropriate forms of assessment and a little on how to implement them. In this video, I learned that the action verbs in the objectives should match the type of assessment given. For example, if you say compose typically the students will write some type of paper. We also read chapter 9: Assessment for Distance Education. This covered various types of assessment tools and methods as well as how to effectively use them.

Item of Interest

My course is involved with thrid-grade mathematics focusing on multiplication and division. Since I am using the flipped classroom approach, my students will watch lectures and play warm-up games prior to coming to class. I would like to have a review self-test for the students to take each week. They will be able to take it Friday-Sunday. The self-test will consist of multiple choice questions. They will be allowed to take it as many times as they want and only their highest score will be recorded. These self-tests will be a good way for the students to notice their strengths and weaknesses. I will also give a pre-test before each unit and a post-test at the end of each unit. This will be a good way for me to track students improvements.

Problem or Concern

I am having a hard time coming up with more ways to assess my third graders. I would like to have a few types of assessment that are fun and engaging. If any of you have any suggestions on some assessments, please let me know. Thanks in advance!
